Planting guide for individual garden kits
General Planting Instructions:
Fill pot with the organic potting medium and firm gently. (Reserve enough potting mix to cover the seeds) Arrange seeds on the soil surface and cover with remaining soil and firm gently. Water. A helpful guide for covering most seed; cover with soil equal to twice the thickness of the see. If your kit includes a peat pot, keep a close watch; the soil in peat pot dries out much quicker than soil in plastic pots. Keep soil surface evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water as needed.
Ideal starting times:
Broccoli (Burney): late March thru early Mar for summer harvest
(Imperial): mid April for summer harvest or June/July for fall harvest (best)
Cauliflower: late April to late May
Kale: late May
Lettuce: 2nd week of March thru 3rd week fo July (succession planting0
Leeks: all of March
Peppers & Tomatoes: 1st week of March (earlier is not necessarily better)
Calendula: end of March
Chives: last week of March
Dill: mid April and on (succession planting)
Parsley: 1st week of March
Cilantro: mid April and on (succession planting)
Each kit contains:
- 1 peat pot or plastic (recycled) pot
- organic potting mix
- seeds – numbers vary depending on type (what reasonably fits into that size pot)
It is recommended that seedlings such as tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce and kale be transplanted into individual pots after 2-3 weeks.
Leeks may grow in the pot until garden soil is ready. Pull the seedlings apart and plant individually 6”- 8” apart.
Green onion seedlings may grow in the pot until garden soil is ready; then plant out in clumps of 5-6 with clumps 6” apart.
